The Met Want To Suck Up All Your Data

The Met, London's police force, is buying "mobile device data extraction" devices that can suck all the data out of your phone "in minutes" -- that's where you've been, who you know, what you've said to them, what websites you visit, and, depending on your apps, what groceries you buy, when you've called for a cab, what your menstrual cycle is, what you eat, your passwords, and so on.

Kind of worrying for #Journalists and #photographers as sometimes the police don't listen or believe they need a search warrant for media gatherers working in journalism and are protected under PACE.

Any one know of any apps to prevent this?

  1. Is a warrant or court order needed for this? It is the same as opening someone's letters isn't it?

    1. Hmm... don't think so, they seem to say they can do it if you are suspected of committing a crime. The police can search your house if they arrest you without the need for a warrant - such as shoplifting to see if there are any other stolen items etc. (I think that is called a section 17 search, but don't quote me on that) The BIG worry is of course they do it under the powers of stop and search! Plus the data is kept even if you are not arrested or charged, which is quite shocking
